Both genders are equally represented in Neverwinter. The gender of your character will only affect its physical appearance, like the visual presentation of equipped armor or Fashion items.
Among the many races present in Faerûn, there are some that have chosen to live together, or at least in proximity to one another. Each race has its own racial abilities, and different bonuses to your character’s starting Ability Scores. Current playable races include Humans, Dwarves, Elves, Halflings, Half-Elves, Half-Orcs, Drow, and Tieflings.
Your character’s class will determine what powers and equipment they can use during their adventure. The Guardian Fighter and Great Weapon Fighter use their brawn to overpower enemies. The Trickster Rogue and Hunter Ranger use subtlety and sharp blades to strategically dispatch their foes. The Control Wizard and Divine Cleric use magic to deal damage to enemies and heal allies respectively.
Your Ability Scores are the rating of your character’s innate traits and abilities. Strength, Constitution, Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma are all used by the different classes in different ways, some scores being more important for a chosen class than others. Every 10 character levels, you can choose to raise one or more of your ability scores permanently.
You can change many aspects of your character’s physical appearance before you start your adventure. Change the body-type or skin color, change and color your hair, and even add tattoos or battle-scars. Make your choices well, changing a character’s appearance after the creation process is costly.
Last but not least, you can give your character a backstory. Select one of various locales from the Sword Coast to be your character’s hometown, as well as which of the deities your character will follow. These options are purely aesthetic, and will not have an effect on your experience.
As an Adventurer in Faerûn, you will meet many denizens of the Sword Coast that will more-than-likely require the aid of someone with your skills. A yellow [!] in a diamond-shape above a person’s head indicates they have a quest they are willing to give you. A Quest will require you to kill enemies, collect goods, or explore the world, before returning the original quest-giver for your just reward. A grey [!] in a diamond means the quest-giver has a quest that you do not yet qualify for.
Your quest journal keeps a running record of all your exploits in Neverwinter. Whenever you acquire a new quest, it will be added to your Journal, which you can view later to review the conversation you had with the quest-giver. The journal also allows players to organize their quests, decide which quest is their current “Primary Objective”, and use the quest-tracker to keep track of certain quests without opening the Journal.
The Quest Path is a system implemented with the quest-tracker to help players navigate the world. The quest at the top of the quest-tracker’s list is automatically made the “Primary Objective”, and the Quest Path will lead a player to said objective. Using the quest journal, you can always change which quests are being tracked, and choose which quest will steer the Quest Path. You can also turn off the path at any time.
When a quest is ready to turn in, a yellow [?] in a diamond-shape above the person’s head will indicate you have completed their quest, and can speak with the quest-giver for your reward. A grey [?] means the quest is still incomplete and therefore cannot be turned in. Most quests start with one quest-giver contact, and end with the same contact or a different contact. Some quests will complete themselves as soon as all objectives are met, and others still can be turned in remotely from anywhere in the world.
At levels 10, 20, 40, and 50 your character can use their experience gained from adventure to increase their base attribute scores. To gain this bonus, two of your 6 attribute scores must be increased by one point each, permanently augmenting your ability score and all derived statistics related to that score. At levels 30 and 60 characters are given a boost of one Ability Points to all six scores.
Powers are your character’s primary mode of combat. A power can have any of a number of effects: dealing damage, restoring Hit Points, protecting allies, exposing an enemy’s weakness, and many more. The powers you have access to are dependent on your class as well as your character-level. Each time you level up, your character will be given an additional Power Point to spend on purchasing a new power or upgrading an existing power.
As your character levels-up they will acquire a host of new benefits to improve their capabilities. These benefits are called Feats, and the selection of Feats available depends on your class. Every level (between 10 and 29) you will receive a Heroic Feat Point, used to upgrade Heroic Feats. At level 30 and after, leveling up gains you a Paragon Feat Point, which is used for the more powerful Paragon feats.
Once your character reaches level 30, they must choose a Paragon Path. A Paragon Path is a specialist sub-class with new powers and feats for you to choose from. For example, a Guardian Fighter can choose to be either the defense-minded Iron Vanguard, or the fully-offensive Swordmaster.
Your character sheet will show you much of the basic information needed to gauge the overall power of your character. Gear, Ability Scores, and Combat Ratings can all be found here. Equipping different gear will affect your Ratings depending on what the qualities of the gear are. This menu allows you to equip gear directly to the corresponding slot, to change the appearance of gear, or review your Ratings and Scores.
All of the loot and various other items you may acquire on your adventure go into your inventory. Most items, like equipment and consumables, go into the main inventory, which can be expanded in capacity by finding/buying larger bags. All your money, dungeon seals, and other currencies go into your Riches tab. Items used primarily in crafting Professions go into their own tab, as do idle Companions.
While exploring the world, you will find new and better equipment compared to what you are already wearing. Recommended Items are usually more powerful than what is currently equipped in the same slot (Head, Armor, Rings, etc). While recommendations are helpful when starting out, the final decision as to which piece of equipment is the best is still ultimately in the hands of the player.
While exploring Neverwinter, you will come into contact with many other players and their characters. Players that you enjoy interacting with can be added to your Friends List, which collects the account name of other players. When interacting with another character near you, you can view their Character and Account names, which follows the format of [Character Name@Account]. The character name is specific to whichever character is currently logged in, the Account is the same for all characters created by that player.
Sometimes the challenges of adventuring in Neverwinter are too much for an individual character, and it becomes advantageous (or sometimes necessary) to form a group. ‘Group’ refers to a group of players who have banded together to share experience and loot. When you come upon another player in the world, you can ask them to join your group, or request to join their existing group. Groups are not permanent, and can be disbanded whenever the participants choose.
In addition to exploring the world on your own, there are also challenges and trials meant to be completed by parties of adventurers. For Dungeons, Skirmishes, and PvP Arenas, you can access Queues from the Main Menu, and sign up to participate in any event your character is currently eligible for.
During the day, there will be a rotating series of Events that players can participate in for extra rewards. The Professions Event awards bonus profession items from skill nodes. The Skirmishes Event will award players with Rough Astral Diamonds for completing any Skirmish. The Arena PvP Event awards 150% of the normal Glory reward for completing a PvP match. Dungeon Delves will open up a special treasure chest at the end of any dungeon entered during the event.
Companions are divided into Types just like Character Classes. Defender companions focus on absorbing blows and drawing the enemy’s attention away from the player. Controller companions have various powers used for crowd control, and help you fight with more than just damage. Striker companions have the highest damage-output of any companion type. Leader companions help players and their parties with protective and healing powers. Augment companions will not fight with you, but while summoned they will improve their owner’s stats.
Your companions will gain experience and levels just like your character. While a companion is summoned, it will receive a percentage of all experience points you acquire. When your companion has gained enough experience, you can send them out to train and level up. Each companion has a different maximum level based on its Quality. When a companion reaches the maximum level, the Quality can be increased with Astral Diamonds or Companion Rank Tokens.
When your companion has gained enough experience to level up, they need to be sent out to train. While training, a companion cannot be summoned, made idle, or have their equipment and runestones altered. The duration of training increases as your companion gains higher levels. Training sessions can be rushed for Astral Diamonds.
All companions have an Active Companion Bonus that they can bestow on the player or other companions. Each bonus is different, and will be in-effect as long as the Companion occupies an Active Companion Slot. When a Companion has their quality upgraded, their Active Bonus will increase in effectiveness as well. All characters start with 3 Active Companion Slots, will gain an additional slot at level 30, and the last slot unlocks at level 60.
During the course of your adventure, you can collect a wide variety of companions. Not all of them can be Active at the same time, so the others must be stored as Idle. Idle companions keep their level, name, and runestones, and will sit in your inventory until made active again. Idle companions cannot, however, keep their equipment, gain experience, or be sent to train.
Professions are a great way of making gear and other items that can be used by your character or traded to other players. There are four types of armor-crafting, Tailoring tasks produce Cloth Armor, Leatherworking makes Hide and Leather Armor, Mailsmithing produces Chain and Scale Armor, and Platesmithing will yield Plate Armor. To craft weapons, you can use Weaponsmithing to make bows and blade weapons, while Artificing will allow you to create magical Orbs and holy Symbols. Leadership has many longer-running tasks that yield bounties of wealth and experience. Alchemy can be used to create a wide variety of potions and elixirs, as well as transmuting profession resources into other items.
Resources are the basic materials needed to complete crafting tasks. Resources of all sorts can be found in skill nodes, in treasure chests, and looted from enemies. The type and amount of resources needed varies by Profession and specific tasks, and there are some resources you can have your Craftsmen collect for you.
Assets are required to complete crafting tasks, but unlike Resources, Assets are typically not expended after using them for a task. There are two types of Assets: Craftsmen and Tools. Craftsmen decrease the time it takes to complete a crafting task, and Tools increase the quality of the rewards. When a crafting task has slots available for additional assets, using more Tools and Craftsmen increase the bonuses they provide.
Crafting tasks take time, anywhere from a few seconds to hours. The quality of the Craftsmen used will affect how much time is needed, and all Assets & Resources used for the task will be unavailable until it completes. Your crafting tasks will continue to process while you are logged out. You can also get any Crafting task to complete immediately, if you pay enough Astral Diamonds.
Enchantments, Runestones, and Artifacts can be improved by Refinement. Refinement takes the magical energy of these items and combines them to make an item more powerful.
You can use Enchantments, Runestones, or gems like Pearl and Peridot to increase the Refinement Points of the item you are refining. When the Refinement Point meter has been filled for an Enchantment or Runestone (or the Rank meter for Artifacts), it is ready to be upgraded.
When you refine an item to the point of upgrading it, you will need additional Reagents to complete the upgrade process. Upgrading is not a guaranteed process, and the chance of success drops drastically as you try to upgrade items to their highest levels. A failed upgrade attempt will consume all readied reagents, but this can be prevented with wards.
Wards are magical items capable of augmenting the refinement upgrade process. Preservation Wards will protect your Reagents in the event that your upgrade attempt is unsuccessful, yet the ward is only used if the process fails. Coalescent Wards are more rare, and will guarantee the success of any attempted upgrade, but will be consumed in the process.
While most content can be completed solo, there are certain challenges that require players to join forces. Dungeons are large and intricate instances filled with tough enemies and even tougher bosses. Once you reach the maximum level, you can access Epic dungeons, which are more challenging (and more rewarding) versions of previous dungeons. Skirmishes are shorter challenges, the content of which varies by which Adventure Zone it takes place in. All dungeons and Skirmishes can be access by the queue menu, either as a single player looking for a group, or a partial/full group looking to enter.
Once your character reaches the level-cap, they will qualify to start end-game Campaigns. Campaigns open up new zones and daily quests for players to complete, which can lead to new and powerful awards. By completing quests and gaining Campaign currency you will be able to progress through the campaign and acquire all it has to offer.
There are multiple currencies used in each Campaign, some are awarded for completing Daily and Weekly quests, while others can be acquired by turning in the corresponding zone's bounty items. All types of currency will be utilized in different ways to progress through the campaign.
One of the greatest advantages of completing Campaign tasks is acquiring Boons. A Boon is a permanent augmentation to your character, giving them increased stats or new combat abilities. Each Campaign has its own series of Boons, each increasing in power as you progress further in the Campaign.

Found throughout Faerûn, Astral Diamonds are used for a variety of purposes, like bidding on the Auction House, speeding-up crafting tasks, and completing Campaign tasks. Completing Daily Quests, Leadership Profession tasks, and many other sources will grant you Rough Astral Diamonds. These Rough Astral Diamonds must be refined in your inventory before they can be spent, and you can refine a maximum of 24,000 per day.
Zen is the proprietary currency used in Perfect World and Cryptic games. Bought in exchange for your region’s local currency, Zen allows players to buy items from the Zen Marketplace. Using the Astral Diamond Exchange, players can place bids to sell their Zen for other players’ Astral Diamonds, or vice-versa.
Gold is the most common currency in Neverwinter. Found on enemies, in chests, and granted from Leadership tasks, Gold can be easily traded between players, and is used to buy most basic consumables. 100 Copper = 1 Silver; 100 Silver = 1 Gold.
Each Adventure Zone has a Bounty available, where by collecting an item specific to that zone allows characters to trade for item-rewards and Seals. Seals are most commonly found in dungeons, and can be traded to Seal Vendors in Protector’s Enclave for level-appropriate gear.
Originating from the frozen tundra of Icewind Dale, Black Ice is a magical substance that can be used to create and augment equipment. Raw Black Ice can be mined from nodes in Icewind Dale, or acquiring from Heroic Encounters. This raw material must be refined into Black Ice by using the Black Ice Shaping task. Only refined Black Ice can be used to create/empower equipment.
Tarmalune Trade Bars are acquired by opening lockboxes, and can be exchanged for many different items in Protector’s Enclave. There are also tokens associated with certain events that can be exchanged for exclusive items and perks.
High-quality equipment, Campaign Boons, and certain class-options all raise your combat statistics. Both your combined Offensive/Healing score and your Defensive score are combined into the statistic known as Gear Score. Gear Score is a relative power-rating for characters, and high-level Epic dungeons require a minimum gear score to join the queue.
Starting at Level 11, your character can call upon the deities of Faerûn to ask for their blessing. Experience points, consumable items, Rough Astral Diamonds, and temporary Boons can be acquired from the process of Invocation, which can be performed at any campfire or altar. The first time you Invoke the Gods per day, you will receive special tokens that can be used to trade for items in the Vault of Piety.
Each day you can acquire one or more repeatable Daily Quests. These quests award experience and Rough Astral Diamonds for completing Skirmishes, Dungeons, or other tasks.
The Foundry allows players to create their own maps, stories, and quests set in the land of Faerûn. Job Boards, Harper Agents, and the Foundry Catalog will all give you access to a wide variety of community-created quests to embark upon. After completing a Foundry mission, you will have an opportunity to rate the quest, and give the author feedback on their content.
All the most rare and powerful items in Neverwinter can be viewed in the Collection Page. For each item, you can view the tooltip and location where you can find it in-game.
